Nothing is so important to our lives as the good news of the Gospel. It is rest when our hearts are tired, peace when our souls are anxious, and joy when our minds are burdened. Preaching the Gospel to our own souls daily is a wonderful weapon in our Spirit’s war to keep our eyes on Christ through all things.
The Gospel
God, out of His free will created the Heavens and the Earth, and all that is in them (Genesis 1:1). He created man (Adam) from the dust, and woman (Eve) from the rib of the first man (Genesis 2:7,21-22). Adam and Eve were representatives of humankind, and representatives of us. Unfortunately, Adam and Eve were deceived by the serpent in the garden, and sinned against God (Genesis 3). Since they were representatives, their sin passed on to every human, like a virus we’re born with (Psalm 51:5, Romans 3:10-11). We became covered in sin, and unable to be in right relationship with God (Ephesians 2:1, Romans 8:8). God gave us a law to follow to be right with Him, but we were unable to. The law God gave us actually shows us how fallen we are (Galatians 3:10-11, Romans 3:20).
But God always had a plan, even before He made the world (Ephesians 1:4-6). God sent Jesus Christ, His son, to pay for His people’s sin on the cross (John 10:11), that all who desire Him may freely come to Him (John 3:16). Jesus was sacrificed to pay the debt we owed to God for our sins (Hebrews 9:12, Isaiah 53:5). Now, we who have been full of sin can return to a right relationship with God by believing and trusting in Jesus Christ – we are saved by grace alone through faith alone, and trust in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9, Acts 4:12), and this leads to a changed life (Romans 12:1-2, 9).
We did not deserve to be saved, but while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8) – just like God spoke light into creation at the beginning of Genesis – God spoke the light of faith into our hearts, to receive the good news of Jesus and believe on Him for salvation (2 Corinthians 4:6). We are saved and able to overcome temptation and grow in holiness by the works of Jesus on the cross (Titus 2:11-14)! There is now no condemnation for sin for those who are in Christ Jesus!
